Abstract

1510158 Gas-nitriding steel ROLLS-ROYCE MOTORS Ltd 9 July 1976 [17 Oct 1975] 42594/75 Heading C7U Steel is nitrided by heating to 490-560‹C in a mixture of nitrogen and ammonia, the nitriding potential of which is maintained over a major part of the cycle by holding the ammonia content of the gas stream leaving the furnace at a fixed value within the range 20 to 40%. Preferably the cycle includes a heating phase during which the temperature is raised at a controlled rate to the nitriding level, a nitriding phase, and a controlled rate cooling phase. The ammonia content of the effluent gas may be initially increased to 90% to purge air, and then reduced to the operating level before the nitriding temperature is reached.
