Abstract

1509876 Sulphur containing bisphenols GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 29 June 1976 [21 July 1975 31 March 1976] 26998/76 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises a compound having the following structural formula wherein A and A<SP>1</SP> are selected from structures I and II as follows and X is wherein Ar is a disubstituted p-hydroxyphenyl radical of the formula HOC 6 H 2 RR<SP>1</SP>- where R is in one meta position and R<SP>1</SP> is in the other meta position the radicals (CH 2 ) x , (CHR<SP>2</SP>) y and (CR<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP>) z occur in any order between Ar and Y<SP>1</SP>, Y<SP>1</SP> is -O- or -NH-; R and R<SP>1</SP> are selected from tertiary alkyl radicals having 4 to 8 carbon atoms and cycloalkyl radicals having 5 to 12 carbon atoms, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP>, R<SP>6</SP> and R<SP>8</SP> are selected from hydrogen and alkyl radicals having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R<SP>7</SP> is a trivalent radical derived from an alkylene radical having 2 to 6 carbon atoms, cycloalkylene radical having 5 to 12 carbon atoms or alkylene cycloalkylene radical having the following structural formula R<SP>9</SP> is an alkylene radical having 2 to 6 carbon atoms, Y is -O-, -S-, 1,4-phenylene or and wherein n<SP>1</SP> is 0 or 1, x+y+z is 0 or a whole number from 2 to 12 when Y<SP>1</SP> is -O- and is a whole number from 2 to 12 when Y<SP>1</SP> is -NH-; R<SP>10</SP> is a cycloalkylene radical having from 5 to 12 carbon atoms, R<SP>11</SP> and R<SP>12</SP> are alkylene radicals having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; n<SP>2</SP> is 0 or 1, R<SP>13</SP> is an alkylene radical having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms which can be unsubstituted or substituted with one or two groups of the structure wherein B conforms to structural formula R<SP>14</SP> is an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or phenyl and m is 0 or 1 with the proviso that when Y<SP>1</SP> is -O-, m is 1. They may be obtained by the base catalysed addition of a polymercaptan to a 3,5-di-t-alkyl-4-hydroxyphenylalkyl ester or amide of an α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acid. They are useful as antioxidants for polymers.
