Abstract

1509492 Machinery guards MOTORENUND TURBINEN UNION-MUNCHEN GmbH 22 Jan 1976 [23 Jan 1975] 02538/76 Heading F2J [Also in Division F1] A protective housing structure for the high speed rotor 1 of a compressor, gas turbine or centrifuge, includes a tubular wall composed of two concentric cylindrical layers the radially innermost layer 3 of which is formed of a ceramic material such as sintered aluminium oxide which, in the event of the rotor 1 breaking up during operation, is capable of being shattered when hit by radially outwardly flung disintegrating parts of the rotor 1 so that the kinetic energy of these rotor parts is substantially dissipated within this layer 3, the radially outer layer 2 being formed as a sheet metal tube of, for example, steel, titanium or aluminium, which is shrink-fitted on the ceramic inner tube 3, and has a mechanical strength sufficient to withstand the impact of the disintegrating rotor parts upon the ceramic inner layer 3. As an alternative to shrink fitting the outer layer 2 on to the inner layer 3, the inner layer 3 may be contracted by being reduced to a low temperature and then fitted into the outer layer 2 such that the inner layer 3 then responds to fit tightly within the outer layer 2. It is stated that the high energy consumption occurring when the impact energy is converted largely into atomizing energy to destroy the cohesion of the dense and fine-grained structure of the ceramic inner layer largely neutralizes the kinetic energy of the disintegrating rotor ports such that the surrounding sheet metal tube only has to absorb a small remaining part of the released kinetic energy.
