Abstract

1508135 Apparatus for controlling air pollution TURNER LISLE Ltd 5 Aug 1975 [7 Aug 1974] 34810/74 Heading B1R An apparatus for controlling air pollution in processes evolving fume comprises an intake 16 for the fume, a passageway for the fume through the apparatus defined by a region 17 of large surface area, restricted opening 20, region 23 of enlarged cross-section, restricted opening 25, region 27, region 30 of restricted cross-section and enlarged region 31, a scrubbing liquid collection tank 34 and reservoir tank 38 with weir 37 for gravitational collection of the scrubbing liquid, wherein nozzles 18 in region 17 provide a spray cone of scrubbing liquid with large drop size, nozzles 21 provide a fine drop size spray, nozzles 24 in region 23 provide a mist spray, nozzles 28a in region 27 provide a fog of liquid droplets and nozzles 23 provide a spray on to baffles 32 so that air passing therebetween passes through continuous films of liquid washing from the baffles 32. Liquid falling from region 17 is collected in throat 28 and forms a continuous falling curtain in opening 25 through which curtain the fume must pass. A fan inducts fume into the apparatus and expels the purified air into chimney 14. Gap 35 allows liquid from regions 17 and 23 to flow into tank 34. A chemical reactant e.g. lime, may be added to the liquid in tank 34 to remove reactive impurities, e.g. NH 4 Cl from galvanizing.
