1507712 Making alkali metal borosilicate glass POST OFFICE 14 July 1975 [29 July 1974 9 Dec 1974 24 Jan 1975] 51040/76 51041/76 and 51042/76 Divided out of 1507711 Heading C1M Molten alkali metal borosilicate glass is treated (to render it suitable for use in optical waveguides) by bubbling through the melt a gaseous mixture of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. The gaseous mixture preferably includes up to 20% by volume of CO. The melt may be maintained at 800-1400‹C during the treatment, which may be for 30-120 minutes. The gaseous mixture preferably is bubbled through the melt at a rate of 100-500 c.c./min./kg. of batch material. The molten glass may subsequently be fired for up to 40 hours in air or, preferably, dry CO 2 or N 2 . The glass is preferably an alkali metal borosilicate glass comprising a redox buffering oxide as claimed in Specification 1,507,711.
