Abstract

1507367 Radiation pyrometers SIEMENS AG 7 May 1975 [10 June 1974] 19234/75 Heading G1A A radiation pyrometer for measuring the temperature of a primary source measures the amount of radiation received from that source in each of two different wavelength ranges, and stores the ratio of these amounts; the pyrometer has a secondary source whose temperature is adjusted until the ratio of the amount of radiation it emits in the same two ranges equals the stored ratio, at which point the temperature of the secondary source, which then equals that of the primary source, is measured. In Fig. 1, the radiation from primary source 1 to be investigated is received by two photodetectors 3,3' responsive to differing parts of the spectrum, and the ratio of the detector signals is found at 4. With switch 5 as shown the ratio is fed to store 6, the stored value being supplied to a comparator 7. Once the ratio has been stored, control unit 10 activates a power supply 9 for the secondary source 8 and also changes over switch 5. Whe comparator 7 signals that the ratio equals the stored value, unit 10 triggers a measurement of the secondary source temperature, this being effected at 12 by measuring the heating current or the resistance. The temperature is read out on digital display 11. The secondary source 8 should be made of a material producing the same spectral radiation distribution as that of the primary source to be measured. The photo-detectors may be semiconductors, e.g. germanium.
