Abstract

1507227 Copper alloy OLIN CORP 24 July 1975 [30 Aug 1974] 31013/75 Heading C7A [Also in Division B3] A method of making copper alloy workpieces, e.g. strip, sheet, rod or wire, comprises using as a starting material a copper alloy which has been hot worked to reduction of thickness of at least 50%, the thickness being 0.200"-0.750", annealing the starting material at 40%-70% of its melting temperature for 1-24 hours and cold working it. The starting material is a cast ingot which has been hot rolled and is an alloy containing 2.5%-3.1% Al, 1.5%-2.1% Si, 0.25%-0.55% Co balance Cu. Hot rolling is performed at 800 -920‹C, preferably 850 - 900‹C, and internal cracking occurs. Dissolved hydrogen in the alloy diffuses in these cracks and a hot working reduction of 75%-95% is preferred to reduce the number of cracks. Annealing diffuses the hydrogen from the material and the minimum thickness of 0.200" ensures that the material is able to resist the expansion of the cracks from the pressure of the hydrogen. Annealing is preferably carried out in a conventional reducing atmosphere. The final cold working comprises rolling to a reduction of at least 60%, preferably 75% to weld together the internal defects or to a reduction of 40% followed by further annealing.
