Abstract

1506445 Work hardening extruded reinforced thermoplastics BASF AG 30 July 1975 [31 July 1974] 31862/75 Heading B5A [Also in Division E1] A work hardened wire or profile is made by mixing a molten thermoplastics material with reinforcing aluminium needles in a screw extruder, from which the wire or profile is extruded with the needles axially oriented and is then hardened by cold working. The needles are preferably treated with hydrochloric acid to remove oxide, and comprise 5 to 40% by weight of the mixture, are of a length of 0À3 to 6 mm. and of average diameter of 0À02 to 0À1 mm., and are of a ratio of length to average diameter of 3 : 1 to 100 : 1, preferred ranges of these parameters being specified. The thermoplastics may comprise polyvinylaromatics, polyvinyl halides, polycarbonates, saturated polyesters, polyacetals, polyolefins such as polyethylene of 0À94 to 0À97 gm./cm.<SP>3</SP> density, and specified polyamides. The examples relate to Nylon 6, with mechanical properties of the reinforced and unreinforced material compared. The screw of the extruder A discharges the mixture through an annular gap B and, via a flow constriction C, to a die D from which the wire or profile is drawn by means J through a cooling ring E, a cooling zone F, a drawing die G in which the cold working is effected, and an annealing zone H. Cold rolling may be effected prior to, or after the die G. The extruder screw comprises a flight depth at its inlet and outlet ends which is respectively of 1À2 to 1À5, and 0À4 to 0À8 times the length of the aluminium needles. The cooling zone F comprises sequential temperature controlled zones of which the upstream zone is at least 20‹ C. below the crystallile melting point of the thermoplastics, and the subsequent zones are of temperature such that the extrusion is cooled to not above 50‹ to 60‹ C. The die G effects a drawing of 2 to 10 times and, for wires, comprises a conical entry of 30 to 90 degrees, a cylindrical shaping passage of a length of 0À1 to 0À4 of the wire diameter, and a conical outlet of 3 to 10 degrees.
