Coking processes.-Steam is superheated to above 700‹ F. before being admitted to the lower part of vertical retorts for the purpose of forming water-gas. The steam enters a nest of tubes a formed in the fireclay walls of the furnace: as it passes along the tubes it becomes superheated by the waste gases and finally enters the carbonizing-chambers through nozzles e.
