1505671 Hydrodesulphurization of residual oils SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 27 March 1975 [29 March 1974] 12926/75 Heading C5E In a process for the catalytic hydrodesulphurization without catalyst replenishment of a vanadium- and nickel-containing residual hydrocarbon oil using a desulphurization catalyst having a total pore volume above 0À30 ml/g, less than 10% of which is present as pores with a diameter larger than 100 nm and such a specific average pore diameter p and specific average particle diameter d that where P H2 is the hydrogen partial pressure applied, the desulphurization is preceded, to extend the life of the desulphurization catalyst, by a catalytic hydrodemetallization in which the metal content of the oil is reduced from M, to M 2 , the degree of demetallization being chosen in dependence on the desired extension of the life of the desulphurization catalyst according to the relation where L 1 and L 2 represent the lives of the desulphurization catalyst in the application to non- demetallized oil with a metal content M 1 and demetallized oil with a metal content M 2 respectively and in which: and (p in nm, d in mm, P H2 in bar, L 1 and L 2 in hours, M 1 and M 2 in ppmw). Both the demetallization and desulphurization are preferably effected at a temperature of 300 to 475‹ C., a hydrogen partial pressure of 50 to 250 bar, a space velocity of 0À1 to 25 parts by weight of feed per part by volume of catalyst per hour and a hydrogen/feed ratio of 100 to 2000 NL H 2 /kg of feed. The desulphurization catalyst may comprise Ni and/or Co together with Mo and/or W on a support such as alumina or silica/alumina.
