Abstract
1504421 Extruding; working at specified temperatures SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd 21 May 1975 [23 May 1974] 21791/75 Headings B3P and B3V [Also in Division C7] A high strength, heat treatable aluminium alloy is prepared by extruding as annealed cast alloy billet to produce a reduction in area of 20-75%, extruding the billet again within the solution heat treatment temperature range of the alloy and quenching the extrudate after the second extrusion. After homogenizing the billet by annealing, it is first extruded at 700-850 F. to produce a reduction in area of 20-75%. During the second extrusion, the billet is extruded at an extrusion ratio of not more than 30 : 1, the extrusion speed and the billet container temperature being controlled to prevent an undue rise in temperature of the billet. The extrudate is quenched by moving it through a water quench. Alternatively, the extrudate may be transported through an insulating tunnel to maintain its temperature and is quenched after it has been separated from the die. The extrudate is finally straightened and aged.
