Abstract

1504386 Coiling rolling mill products; removing wound coils MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO 13 Oct 1975 [8 Nov 1974] 41858/75 Heading D1T An apparatus of the kind in which a rolling mill pours its product 40, Fig. 1, into a rotating coil forming chamber 14 comprising a central upstanding core 18 on a support plate 16 is characterised by a pickup device 62 which can be opened to receive a coil resting on the support plate 16 and which can be closed to support the base and sides of the coil when the plate 16 and coil are vertically separated, and means for transferring the pick-up device 62 from a first pick-up position to another position. In Fig. 1 a piston rod 32 is used to raise the completed coil to an elevated position, shown in cross-hatched lines in Fig. 3, where the pickup device 62 is in its first pick-up position to receive and support the elevated coil upon subsequent lowering of the plate 16, and means for then moving the coil transfer means 46 to a further position. In Fig. 3 the coil transfer means 46 includes a loom 58 on which a plurality of depending legs 62 are pivoted at 64. The legs 62 include counterweighted sections 66 that bias the legs 62 to an open setting indicated in broken lines. When a completed coil has been raised on its plate 16 to an elevated setting, operating assemblies 80, 84, 86 are actuated to swing the legs 62 to a closed setting, shown in full lines, such that inwardly projecting foot portions 68 on the legs swing to coil supporting positions under the completed coil, the foot portions 68 extending into peripheral notches formed in the plate 16. These notches permit the plate 16 to be lowered without snagging the foot portions 68 and so leave the coil supported by the legs 62. The operating assemblies 80, 84, 86 are then actuated to swing rollers 80 thereof away from the legs 62, the legs 62 remaining in the full lines setting by virtue of the weight of the coil resting on the foot portions 68. The beam 58 is then rotated from the setting shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 1 where the coil is over an elevator 98. An empty core 118, on a lower trolley 116, is moved to the left off a turntable 114 and along a lower track 108c onto the elevator 98. The elevator is then raised to cause the core 118 to enter the coil and to cause the trolley 116 to lift the coil off the foot portions 68, the trolley 116 having notches into which the foot portions 68 can depend. This causes the legs 62 to swing outwardly away from the coil by virtue of the counterweights 66, and the loaded trolley is then moved to the right along an upper track 108b to a second turntable 112. The beam 58 then swings back to a settingover the chamber 14 to await the elevation of the next completed coil and the elevator 98descends to the level of the track 108c to await the next empty core 118.
