Abstract

1504378 Latex-modified cementitious compositions DOW CHEMICAL CO 10 June 1975 [12 June 1974 (2)] 24865/75 Heading C1H A concrete or prefabricated masonry structure is prepared by heating, at 38‹ to 121‹ C. under less than 80% relative humidity for from 4 to 24 hours, a non-cured cementitious composition or a structure comprising a non-cured cementitious composition, the composition comprising a portland cement or a portland cement mortar containing a vinylidene chloride polymer latex (defined) in an amount to provide from 5 to 22 wt. per cent, based on the cement, of polymer solids. The term "vinylidene chloride polymer latex" is defined as any aqueous colloidal dispersion of an organic interpolymer, the interpolymer being composed of 35 to 90 parts by weight vinylidene chloride, and 65 to 10 parts by weight of at least one other interpolymerized monomer of the general formula wherein R is H or Me and X is -CN, -F, -Cl, -Br, or -COOY wherein Y is a primary C 1 -C 18 alkyl or a secondary C 1-18 alkyl group. The composition may contain mineral aggregate, e.g. stone, gravel, pebbles, granite, carborundum, aluminium oxide, emery, marble chips, cinders, sand or lightweight aggregate and a workability agent, e.g. calcite, dolomite, and magnesite. Formulations used in the examples contain, besides the cement and latex, workability agent, sand, silicone antifoamer and nonionic surfactant (Example 1); pea gravel and sand (Example 2-Mix B) and sand and lightweight aggregate (Example 2-Mix D).
