Abstract

1503237 Disc brakes GIRLING Ltd 1 July 1976 [1 July 1975] 27627/75 Heading F2E A disc brake for vehicles has a friction pad assembly 5 operable directly by a piston 22 and an oppositely disposed friction pad assembly 6 operable indirectly by the reaction on a caliper 17 slidable with respect to a stationary dragtaking member 1; the drag-taking member 1 has a pair of spaced arms 4 extending over the peripheral edge of the disc and having oppositely facing surfaces between which opposite ends of the backing plates 9 of the pad assemblies 5, 6 are guided, the pad assemblies 5, 6 being retained in member 1 against movement in radial and circumferential directions by means of a pair of resilient keeper plates 11 interposed between the oppositely facing surfaces and the ends of the backing plates 9, the plates 11 having ribs 12 of Vee-outline engaged in complementary notches 13 in the backing plates 9. In the embodiment of Figs. 1-4, opposite ends of the plates 11, which are conveniently of metal, are cranked outwardly to form spaced parallel flanges 14 which embrace opposite ends of the arms 4. Pins 15 extend axially through arms 4 and flanges 14 and are coupled thereto by split pins 16. Extensions 23 of the pins 15 are received in resiliently bushed openings 24 in lugs 25 projecting from a radial limb 18 of the caliper 17. The opposite radial limb 19 of the caliper 17 is coupled to the backing plate 9 of pad assembly 6 by two circumferentially spaced pins 26. The limb 18 of the caliper 17, which caliper 17 is of die-cast aluminium is provided with a cylinder 21 in which works the single piston 22. In the embodiment of Figs. 5-8 (not shown) a mounting flange (2) of the drag-taking member (1) accommodates a cylinder (30) in which pistons (31, 32) movable in opposite directions are accommodated. Limb (33) of caliper (17) which is acted upon by piston (32) is of complementary outline to limb (19), which is itself coupled to the backing plate (9) of the friction pad assembly (6) by a single spigot (34). In the embodiment of Figs. 9-12 pins 15 and flanges 14 are omitted and the keeper plates have upper flanges which engage with shoulders 36 on arm 4. The caliper 17 is coupled to the backing plate 9 of pad assembly 6 by means of two spigots 38 and the limb 33 is coupled to the piston 32 by a spigot 39 comprising a plane extension to a bolt 40 screwed through limb 33. The caliper 17 is resiliently biased away from the disc and against rattle by spring clips 41. The calipers 17 of Figs. 5-8, 9-12 may be manufactured as spheroidal graphite iron components.
