Abstract

1502324 Hydrating silicate glass CORNING GLASS WORKS 18 Feb 1975 [25 Feb 1974] 6789/75 Heading C1M A glass body is made by subjecting an anhydrous glass, in the form of powder, granules, flakes, fibres, ribbon, thin sheets or foil, or in the form of a coating, the glass comprising, in mole per cent: 3-25% Na 2 O and/or K 2 O and 50-95% SiO 2 , the said oxides totalling at least 55%, and the balance, if any, consisting of other compatible oxides, to an H 2 O-containing gaseous environment having a relative humidity of 5-75%, and at a temperature above 100‹ C., for a time (e.g. 2-72 h.) sufficient to develop at least a surface portion having sufficient water therein to impart thereto the ability to flow at a lower temperature than the anhydrous glass. The glass produced preferably comprises 1-25% by weight of water, preferably the whole of the glass absorbing water. The treatment is preferably below the softening point of the glass (e.g. below 600‹ C.) The glass may also include at least 15% of one or more metal oxides, the metal(s) having a valency of at least 2, e.g. BaO, PbO, CdO, MgO, CaO, Al 2 O 3 , SrO, TiO 2 , ZrO 2 , MoO 3 , WO 3 or ZnO. The glass may be in the form of powder, granules, flakes, fibres or foils. The hydrated particles may be formed into a shaped mass under pressure, and at a temperature between room temperature and 500‹ C. (preferably 100-400‹ C.). The anhydrous glass may be applied to a substrate (e.g. in dry powder form or as a slurry in water or methanol) to form a coating, and the glass hydrated in situ so that the glass flows and coats the substrate (which may be steel, aluminium, ceramic or glass).
