Abstract

1501891 Ethanol from synthesis gas UNION CARBIDE CORP 27 Jan 1975 [16 Jan 1975] 3369/75 Heading C2C Ethanol is prepared by contacting a synthesis gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen with a catalyst comprising rhodium and iron, under such reactive conditions of temperature, pressure, gas composition and space velocity as to produce acetic acid, ethanol and/or acetaldehyde, collectively in in an amount of at least 50% by weight of the two or more carbon atom products, the mole per cent of ethanol being at least 25% of the total moles of acetic acid, ethanol and/or acetaldehyde, these two carbon atom oxygenated hydrocarbons being at least 10% of the reacted carbon atoms, and recovering the ethanol. The catalyst is preferably used on a support. Other products obtained include methane, methanol, acetaldehyde and acetic acid.
