Abstract
1501878 Electroluminescence THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 Sept 1975 [12 Sept 1974] 39856/74 Heading C4S An electroluminescent panel has colour-changing moisture-indicating material 17 within a plastics material envelope 16. The indicating material may be applied as a layer, spot or spots, or stripe on either the back or front before encapsulation and may be a complex cobalt compound such as which can be precipitated from aqueous solutions of cobalt chloride and potassium cobalt cyanide and made into a suspension with an organic binder such as solution of hydroxy propyl cellulose in formdimethylamide and acetone. Encapsulation may be by a hot pressing treatment with temperatures as high as 250‹ C. and pressures of 500 lb./sq. in., this treatment also converting the indicator compound to the deep blue colour of the anhydrous form. The indicator colour may change to pink due not only to fracture or hole development but also because plastics materials are not completely water vapour impervious. Substrate 10 may be of Al foil adjacent barium titanate coating 11, phosphor layer 12 and electrically conducting translucent layer 13. Application of the individual layers utilizing specific suspension media is disclosed. The envelope is preferably a transparent fluorinated hydro-carbon material.
