Abstract

1500874 Valve stem keeper removing tool; spring compressor W LAWSON 7 June 1976 23387/76 Headings B4C and B4W A tool for the removal or insertion of valve stem keepers or cotters 28 for a valve of an internal combustion engine comprises an elongated body portion 12 having disposed in one end surface 20 a recess comprising first, outer chamber 18 having an inwardly tapering conical wall and a second, inner chamber 16 of cross-sectional area less than that of the rear wall 32 of the outer chamber opening into it via its rear wall 32. Preferably body 12 is cylindrical and formed of hard steel. In order to remove keepers 28 surface 20 of the tool is placed in contact with valve spring retainer 22,. Fig. 3, and the other end of the tool is struck with a hammer. The impact compresses spring 24 and moves retainer 22 away from keepers 28. If the keepers do not fall away from valve stem 26 they are pushed away by annular rear wall 32, the head of the valve stem being received in inner chamber 16. To insert new keepers a natural or synthetic rubber resilient sleeve 14 is inserted into inner chamber 16. Preferably there are screw threads on the outer surface of sleeve 14 and.the inner cylindrical surface of chamber 16 and the sleeve projects beyond end surface 20. With the parts assembled as shown in Fig. 1 the tool 12 is struck to compress spring 24 and allow the keepers to grip the groove in the valve stem. The compression of sleeve 14 causes it to bow outwards, Fig. 2, not shown, and press the keepers inwardly against valve stem 26. Tool 12 may have a connector recess 36 to receive an extension rod.
