Abstract

1500705 Magnetic bubble switches PLESSEY CO Ltd 17 March 1975 [2 May 1974] 19205/74 Heading H3B Magnetic bubbles are switched from one track 6 to at least one of two others 8, 9 by the combined effect of at least three permeable elements 12-14 allowing bubble expansion and a magnetic field impulse generator, i.e. conductor 15, encompassing at least the central element or elements 13. Normally bubbles moving in direction 17 by a 100 kHz rotating field 16 expand over elements D-G then contract over element H along track 9 in direction 19. However, a 1 Ásec., 60 mA pulse applied to conductor 15 erases the central part of an expanded bubble to split it and cause the divided sections to propagate along tracks 8 and 9, whereas a 3 Ásec., 40 mA pulse before a bubble reaches element E diverts it along track 8. Alternatively the conductor 15 may annihilate bubbles. The switch shown may be combined with another rotated 180 degrees from that shown to allow transfer of bubbles between loops (Fig. 4, not shown), and the conductor 15 may have inverted extensions to one or both limbs to encircle the outer elements 12, 14. The bubbles are originally created by splitting off from a bubble captive to a permalloy disc.
