Abstract

1500409 Coated sutures ETHICON INC 10 Dec 1975 50610/75 Heading A5E A surgical aid is coated with an ionic block elastomer of the formula: wherein R is C 1-15 alkylene, R 2 is C 1-6 alkylene, R 3 , R 4 and R 5 are H or C 1-6 alkyl, R 1 is a liquid prepolymer having a molecular weight from 1000 - 3000 selected from polyethers, silicones, polyurethanes and polyamides: Z and Y are selected from hydroxyl and isocyanate groups, ZY being the urethane residue of the condensation of Z and Y; n is an integer 10-1,000; B - is an anionic polymer and X is an anionic or cationic antimicrobial compound or dye group. The surgical aid may be e.g. a wound dressing of suture of polyester, polypropylene, silk, cotton or linen coated with the elastomeric co-polymer using preferably heparin polystyrene sulphonate or a polyacrylate as the polyanionic polymer. Numerous antibiotics are specified as suitable antimicrobial compounds.
