Abstract

1500341 Purification of fatty acid sucrose esters TATE & LYLE Ltd 6 April 1976 [18 April 1975 13 Feb 1976] 16216/75 and 05795/76 Addition to 1399053 Heading C2C A process for the purification of a sucrose ester-containing surfactant which has been obtained by transesterifying sucrose with at least one fatty acid triglyceride to form a first solid material containing: (I) fatty acid mono- and di-esters of sucrose, (II) fatty acid mono-, di- and tri-glycerides, and (III) fatty acid soaps, comprises (a) treating said first solid material with a solution of a metal salt in water or a (C 1 -C 4 ) alkanol, the metal being one which forms fatty acid salts which are insoluble in water or said alkanol, to produce a second solid material containing said insoluble fatty acid metal salts; (b)(i) where the metal salt was in aqueous solution, treating the second solid material with an alkanol having 1 to 4 carbon atoms to give an alkanolic solution containing sucrose esters, or (ii) where the metal salt was in alkanolic solution, separating the alkanolic solution containing sucrose esters thus obtained, and (c) evaporating the alkanolic solution obtained in step (b)(i) or (b)(ii) to dryness to give a third solid material containing sucrose esters. The metal salt is suitably of a Group 2 or 3 metal.
