Abstract

1499515 Supporting tyres eg in tyre testing machines DUNLOP Ltd 11 Feb 1975 [20 Feb 1974] 5712/75 Heading B7C A tyre mounting apparatus comprises two annular bead support members 3, 13, a rotatable, hollow shaft 1 supporting the lower member 3, a substantially cylindrical member 9 on which member 13 is axially adjustable, and means for coupling the shaft 1 and the member 9. This means comprises a frusto-conical recess 2 in the shaft, a frusto conical screw threaded element 8 within the recess, a frusto-conical projection 20 on the member 9, and a frusto-conical screw threaded recess 5 in the member 9. As illustrated, the member 9 includes an internally threaded, resiliently mounted sleeve 10 and the element 8 has thereon an externally threaded extension 6. In operation, with the shaft 1 and member 9 separated, a tyre is positioned on the lower support member 3 and the upper support member 13 and member 9 are lowered by a piston/cylinder assembly (not shown) connected to rod 15 until sleeve 10 contacts extension 6 to force the shaft 4 downwardly. At this time shaft 4 commences rotation, and screwing of the extension into the sleeve 10 facilitates accurate engagement of the element 8 and recess 5. When the torque in the shaft 4 reaches a pre-set level coupling 7 is disengaged. Coupling 17 is released and the member 9 is supported solely by shaft 1 for tyre testing during which a brake 14 is released and shaft 1 is rotated. The head of the shaft 1 and/or the projection 20 may be elastically deformable and to this end the abutting faces of the recess 2 and the projection 20 may either or both be provided with axially or circumferentially extending grooves.
