Abstract
1498481 Heat exchangers CLARKE CHAPMAN Ltd 15 July 1976 [30 July 1975] 31843/75 Heading F4S One of the heat exchanging fluids (e.g. a hot gas) is conveyed to a heat exchanger 14 (e.g. a heat exchanger such as described in Specification 1411472) through an inlet duct comprising first and second tubular members 32, 42, the member 32 having an end portion radially spaced by a gap 50 from an adjacent end portion of the member 42, the member 32 reducing in cross-section in the direction A of gas flow therethrough whereby the gas suffers a static pressure reduction tending to reduce or eliminate leakage through said gap, and the member 42 increasing in cross-section in said direction A whereby the gas, before entering the heat exchanger 14, recovers at least in part the pressure lost in passing through the member 32. Exceptionally, under reduced gas flow conditions, a small reverse leakage flow into the gas stream is permitted. In the region of the gap 50 the duct may be encircled either by a back-up seal 52 or, (see Figs. 2 and 2A) by the heat-insulation lining the vessel 12 containing the heat exchanger and the duct. In a modification (Figs. 3 and 4) the second member of the inlet duct comprises two freely articulated parts (72, 74).
