Abstract
1498405 Luminescent materials and uses thereof THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 March 1975 [5 March 1974 13 Sept 1974] 9883/74 and 40085/74 Heading C4S A B-alumina structured phosphor is composed of an aluminate of Ca, Sr and/or Ba together with Zn and/or Mg, activated by Ce and/or Eu, and optionally with Mn. The matrix may conform to the formula where A=Sr (and/or Ca, Ba); B=Zn (and/or Mg), u:v=5:1 to 1:5 and (u+v):y=1:1 to 1:5. Preferred ratios and specific phosphors are detailed. Preparation may be by heating oxides of the components or compounds which decompose to the oxides and including boric acid or a borate. Some fluoride may be included. Heating may be 1100-1200 C. in nitrogen-hydrogen, and the phosphor may be reheated to 1150 C. and slowly cooled. Detailed preparations are included, and include heating in air for example. The phosphors may be used in c.r.t.s and lamps (e.g. high pHg) and excitation by u.v. (short and long), electrons and X- rays is instanced.
