Abstract

1497809 Clinometers BP TRADING Ltd 23 Dec 1975 [27 Jan 1975 9 April 1975] 3494/75 and 14513/75 Headings G1F and G1N An angular-position sensor comprises a housing 10 in which is mounted a rotation-sensing device 11 having a freely rotatable shaft 14 carrying a pendulum 17, such that angular movement of the housing about the shaft axis causes rotation of the device relative to the shaft, which is retained stationary by the pendulum, to produce a signal. The device 11 is screwed 12 to the housing with its sensing shaft 14 rigidly secured to and coaxial with a cylindrical pendulum 17 having a weight 18. The pendulum is light both in mass and inertia compared with a balanced wheel 24 rotatably mounted on the housing and circumferentially surrounding the pendulum; the housing including the space between the pendulum and wheel is filled with a damping fluid, a cellular member 29 accommodating any expansion of the fluid. To increase damping between the wheel and pendulum these may have interfitting cylindrical portions (17a, 24a), Fig. 1B (not shown). Two such sensors are shown installed at right angles to each other on the outside of a riser pipe, and their output signals are displayed on a CRT and also to an alarm system which operates progressively as predetermined angles of deviation from the vertical or other chosen reference are exceeded.
