Abstract

1496800 Lubricants INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE 19 March 1975 [22 March 1974] 11482/75 Heading C5F A lubricating composition for use as a multigrade oil base consists substantially of a mixture of (a) 50-99% of at least one mineral or synthetic hydrocarbon oil, e.g. solvent refined mineral oils, acid refined mineral oils and hydrorefined mineral oils; (b) 1 to 50% of a composition produced by esterification of at least one di- or tri-carboxylic acid produced by dimerization or trimerization and optional subsequent hydrogenation of an unsaturated monocarboxylic C 14 -C 22 fatty acid, e.g. tetradecenoic acids (e.g. myristoleic acid), hexadecenoic acids (e.g. palmitoleic acid), octadecenoic acids (e.g. oleic acid), octadecadienoic acids (e.g. linoleic acid) and octadecatrienoic acid (e.g. linoleic acid) or an esterifiable or transesterifiable derivative thereof. These acids are esterified with at least one dihydroxy compound selected from polyalkyleneglycols of formula e.g. polypropyleneglycol, in which R, is a 1,2- alkylene radical and n is 2 to 50 and diols of formula in which R,' is a hydrocarbyl radical, e.g. neopentyl glycol, together with either at least one monocarboxylic acid or esterifiable or transesterifiable derivative thereof, e.g. heptanoic acid, 2- ethylhexanoic acid, pelargonic acid, isononanoic acid, isodecanoic acid, undecenoic acid, dodecanoic acid and isostearic acid, or at least one monohydroxy compound of formula R 2 OH or in which R 1 is as previously defined, m is 1 to 50 and R 2 an aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic monovalent radical, e.g. methanol, ethanol, n-butanol, 2- ethylhexanol, isononanol, isodecanol, dodecanol, isotridecanol, isopentadecanol, cyclopropanol, cyclobutanol, cyclohexanol or methylcyclohexanol, provided that where a monohydroxy compound is not used in the esterification, then the dihydroxy compound is a polyalkyleneglycol and where a monohydroxy compound is used in the esterification then the dihydroxy compound and/or the monohydroxy compound contain oxyalkylene groups. The compositions are selected from those in which the molar proportions of dimer acid, polyalkyleneglycol or diol and monohydroxy compound are 2:1:2, those of dimer acid, mono acid and polyalkyleneglycol are 1:2:2, those of trimer acid, polyalkyleneglycol or diol and monohydroxy compound are 2:1:4 and those of trimer acid, mono acid and polyalkyleneglycol are 1:3:3. The compositions also contain 0-40% of an ester of lubricating viscosity selected from esters of dicarboxylic acids with monohydric alcohols, esters of monocarboxylic acids with alcohols having at least two hydroxy groups per molecule, esters of mono- and di-carboxylic acids with polyoxyalkylenated monohydric alcohols and esters of monocarboxylic acids with polyalkyleneglycols and also viscosity improving additives sufficient to impart the desired SAE viscosimetric characteristics to the composition.
