Abstract
149,629. Dumuid, G., and Meenen, G. van. Aug. 2,1919, [Convention date]. Springs, arrangement of; guiding vertical play.-In a suspension device for vehicles comprising a casing secured to the vehicle frame, a barrel with an horizontal axis revoluble within the casing, spiral springs interposed between the barrel and the casing, and a lever connecting the barrel to the axle, the springs 7, Figs. 1 and 2, are arranged radially and are elongated when the barrel 4 turns in either direction. The springs 7 have their ends secured to sleeves 6 on pins 3, 5 mounted on the casing 1 and barrel 4 respectively, and the lever 8 has one end fixed to the barrel and the other end connected to the vehicle axle either rigidly or by means of an articulation. The casing may be secured to the vehicle frame by a rib or lug 2 and bolts or rivets and may be mounted to the rear of the axle as shown in Fig. 3, in which case an adjustable thrust rod 9 is pivoted at 10 to the vehicle frame and secured by shackles to the lever 8; or the casing may be mounted in front of the axle, the lever 8 acting instead of the thrust rod. Two casings and levers may be employed arranged either on opposite sides of the axle or both in front of it, and one lever is connected directly to the axle and the other by shackles. One device is first mounted in position and, after the vehicle frame has assumed the position of equilibrium, the other device is placed in position, so that it acts only in case of further load being added or to oppose upward movement of the frame. The casings are preferably filled with a heavy oil. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) mentions also that the springs 7 may be arranged obliquely or tangentially and act by compression. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
