Abstract

1495867 Separator for alkaline cells YARDNEY ELECTRIC CORP 13 Jan 1976 [12 May 1975] 01210/76 Heading H1B A separator for alkaline electrochemical cells having zinc negative electrodes comprising rare earth inorganic hydroxide in finely divided particulate form dispersed within a matrix of organic material which is non-reactive to the cell electrolyte. The rare earth hydroxide may comprise cerium hydrate, yttrium hydroxide, neodynium, samarmium, gadolinium or terbium hydroxide which may be admixed in powder form with P.T.F.E., vinyl acetate, ethylene copolymer resin, P.V.C. polymer, extruded and cured to form the separator which may be enclosed in polypropylene and used to enclose the zinc negative electrode. Alternatively the rare earth hydroxide may be admixed with the matrix material in liquid form, e.g. P.T.F.E. emulsion, polyolefin resin, a mixture of vinyl acetate and a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate, polyvinyl fluoride resin, fluorinated polyethylene or P.V.C. polymer and a lubricant, e.g. propylene alcohol, acetone, methyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol dried at 100‹ C. for four hours, extruded at 1200 p.s.i. and cured for 1-10 minutes at 360‹ F.
