Abstract

1494317 Applying solid tyres to wheels P J KENT 26 Feb 1975 [26 Feb 1974] 8744/74 Heading B7C A solid, precured tyre or tyre segment is bonded to a wheel by a method comprising placing at least the ground engaging surface of the tyre or tyre segment under compression in a direction parallel to said surface, and simultaneously or subsequently applying the tyre or tyre segment to the wheel. The compression is maintained during bonding of the tyre or tyre segment to the wheel, and the method is such that in the final assembly, the ground engaging surface of the tyre or tyre segment has maintained therein a compressive stress. In one form, an annular tyre of an internal diameter larger than the external diameter of the wheel rim is compressed into engagement with the wheel by a circumferential strap of adjustable length. In a further embodiment, a single coiled strip, whose radius is less than that of the wheel rim is placed on the wheel with its ends abutting so as to compress the ground engaging surface, and in another embodiment the ground engaging surface of each of a plurality of segments having a smaller radius of curvature than the wheel rim is compressed circumferentially when placed on the wheel rim. The annular tyre may be bonded under compression to an inextensible annular reinforcement prior to application to the wheel. The strip or segments may each include an inextensible reinforcement adjacent its wheel rim engaging surface. The annular tyre, strip or segments may also have a curved transverse cross-section of a radius of curvature less than that of the wheel rim, so that when applied to the wheel rim the tyre, strip or segments will also have their ground engaging surfaces compressed parallel to said surfaces in a direction transversely of the wheel. A layer of cushion rubber may be applied between the tyre and the wheel. The tyre may be made of natural or synthetic rubber or plastics, e.g. polyurethane.
