1494081 Punching LUCAS BATTERIES Ltd 11 Nov 1974 [13 Dec 1973] 57931/73 Heading B3W A device for punching holes in the partition walls of a battery box comprises a support, at least one die holder and at least one punch holder mounted on the support, the punch holder(s) being slidable relative thereto, and having means for securing a plurality of dies and a corresponding number of punches respectively to the or each holder, the holders being replaceable by others having differently spaced means for securing dies/punches thereto. As shown, punch holders 26 are reciprocable along a support 11 via a yoke 22 and a rod 17 by a fluid cylinder (not shown). One holder carries three, and the other two, punches 28 which are slidable on pairs of guide rods 32. A die holder 38 mounted in blocks 36, 37 carries die units 40, which include strippers 41, on both sides for co-operation with punches 28. The die units are also slidably mounted on the rods 32. To vary the position of the tools along the rods 32, the holders 26, 38 are moved laterally to detach them from their respective tools and are replaced by holders with differently spaced holes for locating the tools. To vary the position of the tools transversely of the support 11, the die holder is replaced by one of different width and each pair of guide rods 32 with its associated punch holder is moved transversely of the support, clamps 34 holding the rods in the position selected. Tools which are not needed can be temporarily parked at the ends of the rods 32 or removed and replaced by tools of different size. The inverted box 1 is supported on plates 44, the height of which determines the vertical location of the holes to be punched. The plates are mounted on modified, end die units 45.
