Abstract

149,381. Tribe, E. April 4, 1919. Cup-leather joints; sleeve joints.-A pipe joint, comprising a leak-preventing ring 1 having flexible inturned flanges 2 adapted to embrace the outer surfaces of the ends of the pipes to be joined, is formed so that the normal diameter of the lips of the flanges 2 is smaller than that of the exteriors of the pipe sections. The ring 1 may be encased in inextensible material 3 of steel or other metal, vulcanite, &c. incorporated with the ring itself during moulding. The pipes may be recessed, Fig. 5, so that the casing 5 of the ring 1 is flush with the adjacent pipe sections. The ring 1 may be held in position by a retaining ring 7, Fig. 6, formed in two halves secured by an outer steel band 8 driven on to the tapered peripheries of the rings 7. Flanges 9 on the rings 7 engage grooves 10 in the pipe ends to prevent axial displacement. In a modified form the flanges are formed on the pipes and grooves in the rings 7, and these are secured in position by a pair of rings applied to the flanges of the rings 7. The retaining-rings may be hinged together and secured by a locking-pin. An undivided locking-pin 7, Fig. 10, may be used, having grub screws for holding it on to the pipe ends, or fitted with serrated segments pressed by similar screws 19 to grip the sections. In a further modification, the edges of the ring 7 are provided with saw-cuts which form a number of spring catches which engage grooves in the pipe, locking-bands also being employed. Or an undivided retaining-ring may be used with bayonet grooves engaged by pins on the pipe sections. In a further modification, rings 7 formed in two halves, are held in position by retaining-bands, and are formed with grooves which, instead of engaging fixed flanges on the pipe sections, engage flanges formed of loose rings which are secured in grooves in the pipe sections by split wedge rings; or the rings may be in one piece which is split so that they may be sprung over the pipes and held in shallow grooves therein.
