Abstract

1493245 Registering moving material J A WHITE 24 July 1975 [24 July 1974] 32618/74 Heading G3R Material being processed through a machine is registered using registration marks on the material, e.g. for making paper sacks or handling cloth or synthetic plastics. Paper P is drawn off reel 11, through guide rollers 12, glueing station 13 and folding station 14, using draw rollers 10. Rotating drum 15 carrying knife 16 (or a printer) cuts off sections 18 of the paper. Either rollers 10 or drum 15 have their speed controlled to ensure that the marks on the paper register with the knife. The shaft 25 of the drum 15 has a slotted disc (or discs) which produces reference pulses with drum rotation using infrared LED's and photodetectors, Fig. 3a (not shown). The pulses produced by the generator represent distances before and after the registration mark (the so-called advance and retard bands) and the dead band in the middle. The signals are processed, Figs. 3-6 (not shown) to vary roller 10 speed, so that the mark is kept in the dead band region and the knife cuts at the correct position. The registration marks can be a manufacturer's name or motif, a line or a watermark. The draw rollers 10 are driven from a motor, Fig. 2 (not shown) via a variable ratio transmission adjustable by a 3-phase fractional horse power motor or a manual control. An audible alarm and lamps are also provided.
