Abstract

1492945 Vinyl chloride BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 13 Aug 1975 [20 Feb 1974] 41041/74 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C5 and B1] A process for the production of vinyl chloride monomer comprises contacting at elevated temperature a reaction feed containing ethane, hydrogen chloride and molecular oxygen in the vapour phase with a catalyst composition comprising a copper halide, a halide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal and a rare earth metal compound deposited on activated alumina, said catalyst composition containing above 5% by weight of the alkali or alkaline earth metal in a free or combined form. Ethylene may also be present in the feed, e.g. as recycled by-product. Other by-products include ethylchloride and 1,1- and 1,2-dichloroethanes, the latter two of which may be further pyrolysed to vinyl chloride and HCl. The latter may be recovered and recycled.
