Abstract

1492477 Reinforced articles BRITISH STEEL CORP 21 April 1976 [22 April 1975] 16659/75 Heading ClA An article having a hard phase therein is made by infiltering a porous body comprising one of the elements carbon, boron or silicon with a first liquid metallic material, suitably titanium, to coat the surfaces of the pores of the body, said first metallic material being capable of chemically reacting with the material of the porous body to form a hard phase of the carbide, boride or silicide of said first metallic material; the body, optionally after machining to a desired shape, is then heated to a temperature at which reaction takes place whereby the said hard phase of the carbide, boride or silicide is formed on the surfaces of the pores of the body and the body infiltered with a second liquid metallic material, suitably copper, which does not react chemically with the material of the body substantially to fill the pores thereof. After the first infiltering step and subsequent carbidizing, boriding or siliciding an additional infiltering of said first metallic material may be effected, followed by a further carbidizing, boriding or siliciding step.
