Abstract

1492366 Polyethersulphone polymers ICI UNITED STATES Inc 21 July 1976 [5 Aug 1975 21 Jan 1976] 30358/76 Heading C3R Polyethersulphone polymers having molecular weights between 20,000 and 125,000 are obtained by reacting equimolar amounts of a 3,3<SP>1</SP>,5,5<SP>1</SP> - tetraalkyl - 4,41 - dihydroxybiphenyl and a dihalodiphenylsulphone in a dipolar aprotic solvent containing from 0 to 30% stoichiometric excess of an alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate. In examples polymers are obtained by reacting 3,31,5,51-tetramethylbiphenol with 4,41-dichlorodiphenylsulphone in dimethylacetamide in the presence of potassium carbonate.
