Abstract

1492198 Valve timing adjustable while running H-E PETEREK 18 Sept 1975 [21 Sept 1974] 38459/75 Heading F1B A reciprocating-piston four-stroke I.C. engine has an inlet duct 3, an exhaust duct 4 and a valve 1 movable between an open position, in which it communicates the cylinder 2 with the inlet and exhaust ducts, and a closed position and also has means for adjusting the timing of the valve. Cycle of operation HIGH LOAD: The valve is fully-open at the beginning of the induction stroke and closes just after B.D.C at the beginning of the compression stroke. The valve opens just before B.D.C. at the end of the expansion stroke and remains open throughout the exhaust and induction strokes. LOW LOAD: The valve is partly open at the beginning of the induction stroke and remains open during part of the compression stroke, so that some of the charge is rejected. The valve is re-opened at B.D.C. at the end of the expansion stroke or opening may be delayed until the piston has travelled through part of the exhaust stroke. As exhaust gas leaves the cylinder it mixes with air drawn in through inlet duct 3 so that afterburning occurs in exhaust duct 4. Due to the high velocity of the exhaust gas stream air is drawn into the cylinder to provide for scavenging and cooling of the cylinder. In the air-cooled engine shown in Fig. 2 the exhaust gas is injected into duct 9 and draws air through branch passage 26 and over the cooling fins 6 on the cylinder. In a liquid cooled engine a similar arrangement is used to draw air through an engine coolant heat exchanger and/or an oil cooler. A fan may be provided in the inlet duct. Adjusting timing The single valve of the or each cylinder is operated through a tappet by an overhead cam-shaft, driven by a king-pin divided into two parts 22 and 23. Each part is helically splined and drive is transmitted by a sleeve 21, which is movable axially by an element 24. Axial movement of the sleeve produces angular motion of part 22 relative to part 23 since the splines are of opposite hand.
