Abstract

A mixture of 4-chloro-5-oxohexanonitrile and 6-chloro-5- oxohexanonitrile is prepared by chlorinating 5-oxohexanonitrile in a 20 to 40% strength aqueous solution at temperatures from 25 to 55 DEG C. The chlorinated compounds are novel and represent valuable starting materials for the preparation of gamma - or epsilon -amino acids. Moreover, being alpha -chloroketones, they represent valuable components for the synthesis of heterocycles.
