Abstract

1491871 Locking nuts RUBERY OWEN FASTENERS Ltd 5 May 1975 [4 May 1974] 19704/74 Heading F2H A lock nut for securing a vehicle wheel comprises a body 1 with a coaxial tapered seating portion 2 at one end to co-operate with a recessed seating surrounding a bolt hole in the nave of a wheel, and a threaded bore 3 extending axially through the nut and having an annular grooved portion 4 in the region of the seating portion 2 to reduce the stiffness of the seating portion relative to the main body of the nut. This allows the nut to accommodate manufacturing variations in the nave and the nut, and also makes the nut self-locking. The annular groove 4 may have a V cross-section with a rounded apex, or be part circular or rectangular in cross-section. The nut may also have a nylon locking ring (6) in an annular groove (7) in the threaded bore (Fig. 2, not shown).
