Abstract

1491851 Copper and zinc recovery FRIED KRUPP GmbH 26 March 1976 [27 March 1975] 12366/76 Heading ClA [Also in Division C7] Cu and Zn are recovered from concentrates of hydrothermal ore sludges by (a) treating a suspension consisting of a mixture of undried ore sludge concentrate having a solids content of 100 to 250 g/l and spent electrolyte from Zn electrode position, the suspension having 20 to 60 g free H 2 SO 4 /100 g. solids, in an autoclave at 80‹ to 120‹ C. under superatmospheric pressure in an atmosphere containing oxygen for ¢ to 3 hours, (b) subject the resulting suspension after cooling to multi-stage counterflow decantation in a wash concentrator preferably using vapour condensate produced by evaporation of Cu-free refined product (see below) to separate leach liquor and residue, (c) adding a reagent precipitating Cl ions, e.g. Cu 2 O and a gaseous reducing agent such as SO2, and separating the resulting precipitate, (d) extracting Cu from the resulting solution poor in Cl ions by a liquid ion exchanger (e.g. oximes or derivatives of 8-hydroxy quinoline) and after reextraction separating Cu by electrodeposition, (e) subjecting the Cu-free refined product to multistage evaporation and separating Zn by electrodeposition from the resulting concentrated solution after adding milk of lime, and (f) using the spent electrolyte containing H 2 SO 4 from the Zn electrodeposition to form the suspension in (a). Initially the undried ore sludge concentrate may be washed to a Cl content of less than 5 g/l; and a reagent precipitating Fe ions, e.g. Na 2 SO 4 may be added to the suspension.
