1491622 Electro-physical measurement FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 31 Jan 1975 4259/75 Heading G1N [Also in Division G3 ] To monitor the Combustion-Quality-Ratio in an internal combustion engine, an ionization gauge is mounted in the cylinderhead opposite the sparking-plug to detect the arrival of the flame. The signals from the ionization-gauge 15 is applied to two gates controlled by an engine driven timing disc, so that the number of intense-burn cycles (between Œ45 degrees from T.D.C.) and the number of normal-burn cycles (T.D.C. to + 90 degrees) in any period may be counted. The ratio of these counts (the C-Q-R) is sampled periodically and may be fed back to control the engine. The C-Q-R is affected by:- air/fuel ratio ignition timing mixture intake turbulence.
