Abstract

1491371 Purifying propylene polymer slurries SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 5 Jan 1976 [7 Jan 1975] 582/75 Heading C3P A propylene polymer slurry obtained using a titanium halide/organoaluminium catalyst is treated to remove catalyst residues by (a) contacting the slurry with an alcohol and, either simultaneously or subsequently, with oxygen or a peroxide, and then (b) washing the polymer with fresh liquid propylene containing an alcohol. A scavenger, e.g. propylene oxide, may be present to absorb the hydrogen halide formed. The example describes the treatment of a polypropylene slurry in excess propylene (obtained using a TiCl 4 /AlEt 3 catalyst) with 1- butanol/propylene oxide, followed by an O 2 /N 2 mixture or dilauroyl peroxide, the slurry filtered, and the polymer repeatedly reslurried in propylene/1-butanol.
