1491199 Catalytic element for I.C. exhaust conversion UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 25 Oct 1974 [8 Nov 1973] 51978/73 Heading B1F [Also in Division B3] A catalyst body having channels extending therethrough comprises two or more layers of corrugated sheets coated with a catalyst, each of which has the crests 3 of its corrugations lying at an angle to those of an adjacent layer. In one embodiment, a strip, which has been formed by corrugating rolls with corrugations extending at an acute angle across the strip, is cut into sheets which are stacked upon each other so that the crests 3 of the corrugations of adjacent layers lie at an angle to each other. The layers are encased in a can 10. The corrugations may alternatively extend along the sheets. At least some of the sheets may be perforated and may be of metal, e.g. oxidised aluminium bearing ferritic steel coated with platinum or palladium. The body is used for purifying exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine.
