1490975 Turret lathes WICKMAN MACHINE TOOL SALES Ltd 21 Nov 1974 [29 Nov 1973] 55303/73 Heading B3T A turret lathe comprises a headstock 11 with a work spindle 12, an indexable tool turret, having a turret portion 13 on which cutting tools are mounted and a stem portion 14 which extends from the head stock, and which is axially and angularly indexable about an axis parallel to the axis of the spindle guide means 41, 43 being provided to facilitate axial displacement of the stem and turret 13 and which also permits angular indexing of the turret to bring respective cutting tools into an operative position. The releasable connection between the guide means and the turret assembly 13, 14 is formed by a gear clutch device having two concentric crown gear members 44, 45, the gear 45 being secured to the guide arm 43 and the gear 44 secured to the turret stem shaft 14, both gears being simultaneously meshable with a single crown gear 52, axially directed teeth intermeshing. A sleeve 51 extends from the outer gear 45 to shroud the gear 52 and to retain a ring member 54 which is constrained to be axially displaceable by way of a stud 55 in a slot 56 in the sleeve. A cam block 57 is secured to the sleeve 51 such that the ring 54 to which gear 52 is attached is moved axially of the turret stem shaft 14 and hence permits engagement or disengagement of the clutch gear teeth by the action of a piston and cylinder unit 66 and a pin and cam slot 63, 64 between the ring 54 and cam block 57. The lathe incorporates control devices (not shown) whereby release of the guide means and indexing of the turret and stem shaft 13, 14 are effected by desired amounts in a predetermined sequence.
