Abstract

1490859 Polymerizing in the presence of tetrahydrofuran B F GOODRICH CO 18 Dec 1974 54581/74 Heading C3P A process for the production of polymers by aqueous suspension or bulk polymerization of one or more vinylidene monomers, e.g. vinyl chloride containing a terminal vinyl or vinylidene group comprises polymerizing the monomer(s) in the presence of a free radical catalyst at 0-60‹ C. in the presence of 5 parts to 100 parts by weight, based on 100 parts by weight of monomer(s) of tetrahydrofuran, the polymerization being continued to a point no greater than 80% conversion of monomer or monomers to polymer. Preferably the mixture of monomers is vinyl chloride and vinyl acrylate or vinylidene chloride, and exemplified catalysts are sec.-butyl peroxydicarbonate, di(sec.-butyl)- peroxydicarbonate, and di(iso-butyl)peroxide. The T.H.F. partly acts as a molecular weight regulator.
