Subaqueous audible signals.-In an electro-magnetic instrument for transmitting or receiving subaqueous signals, the armature and field-coils are connected by a member 7, part of which lies in a plane and vibrates at right angles thereto. The instrument is enclosed in a casing which includes the diaphragm 2. Polygonal or circular field coils 10, 11, which carry polarising current and alternating current respectively, are surrounded by a magnetic circuit formed of radially arranged iron laminµ 8, 9, which are welded together and to the carrying plates 13, 14. The plate 14 carrying the armature 9 is mounted on a hood 7 integral with the cup 5, which carries the field coils and is bolted to the diaphragm 2. The leads to the coils are brought in through a boring in the screw 12. The air gap can be inspected through a sight hole 16. The horizontal elastic part of the member 7 which connects the field-coils and armature may be formed as a diaphragm or plate or as a cross-beam, rods or the like. In a modification, the armature mounting is bolted to the diaphragm, and is connected to the field coils by a central pillar instead of the hood 7. Specification 148,413 is referred to.
