Abstract

1487602 Nasal tampons G H GOTTSCHALK 9 Oct 1974 22351/75 Divided out of 1487601 Heading A5T A nasal tampon comprises a rubber or plastics tube 10 having one end 18 closed and the other end 20 open, an inflatable balloon 12 sealingly attached to a portion of the tube between the closed end, and a hollow bulb 14, preferably integral with the tube and adjacent the open end thereof, apertures 36 in the tube providing communication between the interior of the tube and the balloon to permit inflation thereof by fluid introduced into the tube, and a soft rubber plug 46 inside the tube adjacent the open end, which plug may be punctured by a syringe needle 78 to inject fluid into the tube and is self-resealable on removing the needle, said bulb being self-sustaining in the absence of internal pressure. A second balloon 16 may be provided on the tube, said balloon being in communcation through a tube 35 with the interior of the bulb. A metal sleeve 38 containing plug 46 at its inner end and a second plug 48 at its outer end is positioned in the open end of the tube and has apertures 44 opening into the interior of bulb 14 so that balloon 16 may be inflated on inserting needle 78 through plug 48 into space 56 in the sleeve between the two plugs. In an alternative embodiment, the tube 35 is dispensed with, apertures (44') Fig. 4, (not shown), in the sleeve (38') being brought into line with apertures (34') in the wall of tube 10 which open into balloon 16. In a modification, the bulb is not integrally moulded or formed on tube 10, but the tube is provided with an inner end portion (90) of reduced wall thickness onto which a flange (92) of the bulb is secured with adhesive. The plugs may alternatively be of plastics. The balloons may be inflated with air or water. Marks 76, 78 are provided on the syringe needle to indicate when it has penetrated the plugs 46, 48 respectively. A third intermediate balloon may be provided with an associated plug. The bulb serves, when the tampon is inserted into a nostril, to prevent the tampon being aspirated by the patient when the balloons are not inflated, the bulb anchoring the tampon against the nostrils.
