Abstract

1487332 Stirling cycle engines UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 12 Nov 1975 [19 Nov 1974] 50135/74 Addition to 1329567 Heading F1S [Also in Division F4] In a Stirling cycle heat engine having a gas displacement system comprising a conduit 13 containing a liquid column coupled at its respective ends to heat absorbing and heat rejecting chambers 14, 15, the liquid column being capable of oscillating to cause alternating variations in the gas volumes in the heat absorbing and heat rejecting chambers, connection to a liquid reservoir 12 is provided for permitting a phase difference in the movement of the ends of the liquid column appropriate for the gas displacement between the heat absorbing and heat rejecting chambers to take place in accordance with the Stirling cycle, the gas displacement system together with the heat absorbing and heat rejecting chambers being mounted for oscillation as a whole (about the point A) under the influence of means separate from the liquid column and responsive to changes in pressure in the working gas. In a modification (not shown), a reservoir or output tube corresponding to the tube 12 is connected directly into the displacer tube 11. With this modification the bellows may be located at the inner end of the reservoir or output tube. It is practicable and desirable to operate the engines at a frequency higher than the resonant frequency of the displacer liquid. The bellows 18 could be sealed from the liquid column and connected to the gas above the liquid.
