Abstract
1486946 Rotary positive-displacement machines H L GRAY 18 Oct 1974 [8 Nov 1973] 45209/74 Heading F1F In a rotary engine, pump or compressor of the Wankel type in which a rotor 32 is rotatable about an eccentric 28 on a main shaft 26, the orbital motion of the rotor within a two-lobed epitrochoidal chamber 20 is controlled by the sliding engagement between an oval surface 46 on an end plate 14 and a substantially triangular surface 48 on the rotor. During each cycle the oval surface 46 makes three-point contact with the substantially triangular surface 48 at two positions and twopoint contact at all other positions. Each apex of the rotor has a seal comprising a pair of sealing strips 54a, 54b slidable in respective inclined slots 56a, 56b in the rotor and bent so as to abut along a radial plane passing through the apex. The radially inner ends of the sealing strips 54a, 54b are provided with gas seals 57a, 57b pressurized through cross-over passages 58a, 58b connected through ports 59a, 59b to the working faces 36a, 36b of the rotor located either side of the seals. Lubricant is supplied to a space 64 between the sealing strips through a passage 62 containing a one-way ball-valve 60. A rotary machine having a rotor with apex seals as described above is claimed Specification 1486947.
