Abstract

1486910 Power-assisted steering K H THOMAS [trading as LANGEN & CO] 26 Nov 1974 [20 March 1974] 51206/74 Heading B7H A power-assisted vehicle steering system providing limited reactive feel forces at a steering wheel 10, comprises an actuating member 8 operatively connected with the steering wheel 10, and an output member in the form of a valve body 1 which is mechanically connected (in a manner not shown in detail in the drawing) both to the steerable wheels of the vehicle and to a piston-rod 18 of a servo-motor 15, relative movement between the actuating member 8 and the valve body 1 being arranged to move valve pistons 4, 5 controlling communication of working chambers 21, 22 of the servo-motor 15 with a pressure source 13 and with exhaust returns T 1 , T 2 , the pressures in the working chambers 21, 22 being transmitted to reaction chambers 27, 28 up to a limit which is set by a pressure-limiting valve 37 so as to limit the reactive feel forces, the system being characterized in that respective pairs of constrictions 25, 26 and 30, 31 are provided in the flow paths 14, 16 between the working chambers 21, 22 and the reaction chambers 27, 28, and in that the pressure-limiting valve 37 communicates with respective points situated intermediate the constrictions 25 and 26 and intermediate the constrictions 30 and 31. The constrictions 25, 30 are said to prevent excessive fluid loss from either of the flow paths 14, 16 when the pressure-relief valve 37 is operating. The constrictions 26, 31 are said to isolate the reaction chambers 27, 28 from rapid pressure variations occurring during operation of the pressure-limiting valve. In a modification of the illustrated system, a separate pressure-limiting valve is connected to each of reaction chambers 27, 28.
