Abstract

1486865 Electrodes KC ALLISON and WH COOLEY 21 April 1975 [6 May 1974] 16310/75 Heading A5R An electrode 10, Fig. 2, for receiving electrical signals from a patient, comprises a resilient, polypropylene container 12 having its lower side closed by a microporous polypropylene diaphragm 16, the top 22 of the container having a central aperture 32 for introducing an electrolyte 18 into the container, said aperture being sealed by a terminal plug 14 which is gripped by a resilient annular flange 36 of the container which extends inwardly of aperture 32, the plug having a nose 58 extending into the electrolyte and a part-spherical portion 60 outside the container for connection to an electrical lead. A mounting pad 20 of reticulated polyurethane foam is secured by heat-sealing to the container and has an adhesive layer 50 on its underside protected by a release paper 52. A flange 62 of plug 14 forms a second seal with a boss 34 on the top of the container when the plug is positioned in the aperture. In a modification, the terminal plug 104, Fig. 5, is hollow and of tin-plated brass, having a rounded nose 140 which extends into the container and an annular head 132 which seats on the top 118 of the container. A connector body 150 is inserted into plug 104 in contact therewith, said body having a connector head 148 contacting head 132 and having a lead 144 connected thereto and lying partially in a radial groove 120 in the top of the container. Modified connectors are disclosed in the Specification. In a further modification, Figs. 8 and 9, (not shown), the annular flange (208) is tapered inwardly and the terminal plug (202) has a threaded portion (212) for insertion through the aperture (204), said plug being rotated until the bottom of a shoulder (218) thereon engages a boss (206) surrounding the aperture. Prior to use, a sealing sheet is positioned over the diaphragm. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 1437121
